Michael Garvens (born December 9, 1958 in Hittfeld ) is a German manager.

biography

After graduating from high school, Garvens studied business administration at the Hamburg Business Academy from 1981 to 1984 and initially worked in his parents' flooring company . Herbert Wendlik, then managing director of the Condor airline and Garven's former father-in-law, brought him to Hapag-Lloyd Luftfahrtgesellschaft as a controller in 1986 . In 1990 Garvens moved to the Lufthansa subsidiary Globe Ground in Berlin, where he took over management in 1999.

Managing Director of Cologne Bonn Airport

From February 1, 2002 until his departure on December 31, 2017, Garvens was Managing Director of Flughafen Köln / Bonn GmbH . When he took over the helm in 2002, the company was reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy . Under the management of Garvens, Cologne / Bonn became the fastest growing airport in Germany. According to the company, the number of passengers rose from 5.5 million to 11.9 million in 2016. The development under Garvens celebrated Die Zeit as early as 2003 as the “miracle of madness”. Among other things, he managed to turn the airport into a hub for low-cost airlines and, with Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express, to win two newcomers to the low-cost airline market for his location.

accusations

In November 2017, Garvens was given leave of absence from Flughafen Köln / Bonn GmbH after he was accused of infidelity . He was accused that he was more partial than 50 employees, including executives over the years exempted have. In connection with the payment of more than one million euros to a freight company for which no consideration can be identified, there is suspicion of illegal leasing by the employee. In addition, he is said to have rented an aircraft for private flights to Sylt from a company that is now insolvent at Cologne / Bonn Airport and not billed correctly. In these cases, the Cologne public prosecutor's office is investigating him. Further allegations concern the manipulation of the selection process for the auditors of the annual financial statements and the delayed elimination of serious deficiencies in fire protection at the airport. Due to an injunction , Garvens returned to work after a few weeks.

An auditor and a consultancy company alleged that there were irregularities in the personnel policy and the operation of the airport. Garvens had the allegations rejected as baseless. In mid-December 2017, Garvens and Flughafen Köln / Bonn GmbH signed a termination agreement that included Garvens leaving the company on December 31, 2017.
