Michael Geither (born November 10, 1769 in Ubstadt ; † September 28, 1834 in Geinsheim ) was Général de brigade under Napoleon .

Life

Born in Ubstadt in the Speyer monastery , Geither was baptized as Johann Michael Geither and was the third child of Johann Geither and Barbara Klara Schädler. As Michael Geither he served in the French army at the age of 14 ½ years (1784 / Landau in der Pfalz ) and rose to the position of chief de bataillon until 1798 after the French Revolution and took on French citizenship . From 1806 he was Colonel in the Bergische Army and from 1811 General. He lost his right arm in the battle of the Berezina .

As a staunch supporter of Napoleon, he defended the Landau fortress in the Palatinate until the autumn of 1815, when the emperor was exiled to St. Helena . On June 2, 1819, at the age of 49, he married his then 18-year-old niece Eva Elisabeth Anna Geither (* December 15, 1800 Geinsheim) in Strasbourg . The marriage resulted in three daughters and one son.

An application by his son Johann Adam Adolf Geither to put the name Geither on the triumphal arch in Paris was rejected in 1842. Geither is the maternal uncle of the Bavarian infantry general Jakob von Hartmann .
