Michael John Nelson (born October 11, 1964 in St. Charles , Illinois ) is an American actor and comedian .

Life

Nelson studied acting at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls , but dropped out before graduation. He then worked as a waitress in the restaurant chain TGI Friday’s and occasionally appeared as a stand-up comedian. It was more or less by chance that he got a temporary job in 1988 on the Minnesota- produced low-budget television show Mystery Science Theater 3000 on local station KTMA. When this was taken over by the Comedy Channel in the second season in 1989 , he had already worked his way up to chief author. During the fifth season, the previous lead actor Joel Hodgson left the show, whereupon Nelson took over this role. In addition to his work as a writer and leading actor, he also directed 18 episodes. The series, nominated for two Emmys , was continued on the Comedy Channel until 1996 and after a one-year break from 1997 to 1999 it was broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel . In addition, a film based on the series was produced in 1996 by Universal Studios .

Since the end of the series, Nelson has worked as a producer for Legend Films , a company that specializes in colorizing black and white films and 3D conversion. It also offers downloadable audio files in MP3 format, in which Nelson comments on feature films in a similar way as in Mystery Science Theater 3000 . These must be played back by the buyer synchronously with the feature film.

Nelson is married to former Mystery Science Theater 3000 author and actress Bridget Jones and the couple have two children.
