Michael Kessler (born March 10, 1949 in Frankfurt am Main , Hesse ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was mayor of the city of Peine from 2006 to 2016 .

Life

Kessler grew up in Schwalbach am Taunus and the Altköniggymnasium in Kronberg im Taunus . There he graduated from high school in 1967 . He then studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin . In 1973 he completed the first state examination. He became a trainee lawyer at the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt am Main . In 1976 he passed the second state examination there (assessor examination). Kessler completed additional commercial training in the porcelain industry, at a bank and a large cooperative . Kessler joined the SPD in 1970. From 1996 to 2006 he was a member of the city ​​council of Peine for his party . From November 1, 2006 to October 2016, he was mayor of the city. In the mayoral election taking place at the same time as the 2014 European elections, Kessler ran again and prevailed against Karl-Heinrich Belte from the Peiner Bürgergemeinschaft (PB) with 73.9% of the votes. In advance, however, he announced that in the event of an election victory, he would only hold office for 2 years. On November 1, 2016, Kessler handed over his office to his successor Klaus Saemann (SPD).

Kessler is married and has two children.
