Michael Labiner (born September 23, 1960 in Munich ) is a German journalist , author , entrepreneur and alternative practitioner for psychotherapy . He became known primarily as the publisher and editor-in-chief of the computer game magazines Amiga Joker and PC Joker .

Career

Michael Labiner was born in Munich in 1960 and graduated from the Nymphenburger Gymnasium there with the Abitur in 1977 . During his school days he worked as an editor for the school newspaper there. After graduating from school, he trained as a journalist and then worked for Bild , Münchner Merkur and Süddeutsche Zeitung , among others . After his later work as editor-in-chief of the Amiga magazine Amiga Special of Media Verlag, he founded Joker Verlag as a sole proprietorship in 1989 with the support of his then wife Brigitta Labiner , which published the first pure Amiga game magazine Amiga Joker in Germany. The publisher was initially based in Haar near Munich , then in Grasbrunn and finally as Joker Verlag Labiner GmbH & Co. KG in Baldham .

Amiga joker

The first issue of the magazine appeared in November 1989 with issue 11-1989 and initially proved to be a flop. A total of 50,000 copies of the first edition were printed, but just under 15,000 copies were sold. The first edition is now a sought-after collector's item . The Amiga Joker was later marketed as "the best-selling entertainment magazine for the Amiga". With the bankruptcy of Commodore International in April 1994 and Escom and its subsidiary Amiga Technologies in July 1996, the magazine was also discontinued a few months later with the double issue 10 / 11-1996 for lack of new software for the Amiga at the end of 1996.

PC joker

Parallel to the Amiga Joker , the PC Joker was introduced in the 06-1991 issue in mid-1991 and is considered the most successful publication by Michael Labiner with a print run of up to 250,000 copies per month. In the initial phase, the magazine was initially published every two months and a few months later after it was successfully launched on the market, it was published monthly. The last issue of PC Joker was issue 1-2001. The already prepared issue 2-2001 was no longer published due to the bankruptcy of the Joker Verlag due to the growing competition from larger publishers. After the bankruptcy, Michael Labiner withdrew from the publishing industry.
