Michael Loebenstein

Michael Loebenstein (* 1974 in Vienna ) is an Austrian cultural manager , curator and author . From 2011 to January 2017 he was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) of Australia . In November 2016 he was appointed director of the Austrian Film Museum on October 1, 2017.

Life

From 2000 to 2004 Michael Loebenstein wrote for the weekly newspaper Falter and for kolik.film , among others , the special issues of the literary magazine kolik appearing on the occasion of the Viennale and Diagonale film festivals , and worked as a freelance curator and media designer. From 2004 to 2011 he built up the education and research department for the Austrian Film Museum and supervised various projects as a curator. He also worked at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for History and Society (LBIGG) in Vienna , where, among other things, he worked on the research projects “Like Seen on the Screen. The media and our living environment ”and“ Film.Stadt.Wien. A Transdisciplinary Exploration of Vienna as a Cinematic City ”. From 2011 to 2013 he led the project Ephemeral Films: National Socialism in Austria together with Ingo Zechner and then worked in an advisory capacity for this project until 2016. From February to June 2017 he was a research associate in the "I-Media-Cities" project.

In 2011 he moved to the Australian Federal Archive for Film, Radio and Sound Documents , the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) in Canberra , as director and managing director , a position he held until January 2017. In 2013 he was elected General Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film (FIAF). In November 2016 he was appointed by the board of directors of the Austrian Film Museum founded by Peter Konlechner and Peter Kubelka (directors from 1964 to 2001) to succeed Alexander Horwath (director from 2002 to 2017) as director of the Filmmuseum on October 1, 2017.
