Michael Sachs (theologian)

Michael Sachs (born September 29, 1542 in Mehringen , Saxony-Anhalt , † 1618 in Wechmar ) was a Protestant pastor in Wechmar in the Gotha district in Thuringia . He is the author of several works and was a fighter against the Counter Reformation .

Life

Michael Sachs is the son of Celiax and Ursula Sachs. Little is known about his education; only so much that he studied in Erfurt at a young age , since from there he was employed as a cantor in Remda at the age of 19 (1561) . A year later he became town clerk in Egeln near Magdeburg . In 1563 he returned to Remda as a school clerk, where he was appointed to the preaching office in 1565. In 1569 he came to Gräfentonna as court and palace preacher , then to Ohrdruf in the same position and finally to Wechmar.

The journalist, musician and author Volker Hagedorn recently reported on Michael Sachs' life and writings. His book shows that several Wechmar ancestors of Johann Sebastian Bach had to do with Michael Sachs, who lived and preached there from 1593 until his death in 1618 as “pastor” and “one of the most eloquent and radical Lutherans of their time”. Sachs was the pastor at Johannes Bach's wedding in 1604 and baptized his children Johann Bach , Christoph Bach and Heinrich Bach .

Michael Sachs published over 70 writings, mostly religious ones.

His book Christlicher Zeitvertreiber or Retzelbuch, in which the funniest questions and answers are written, was particularly successful . About God, about creation, about angels, devils, people, and all kinds of creatures and plants that appeared for the first time in 1593 (Part I) and 1600 (Part II) and in 35 editions up to 1620.
