Michael Solomon Alexander

Michael Solomon Alexander (born May 1, 1799 in Schönlanke , Posen , † November 23, 1845 in Bilbeis near Cairo ) was the first Anglican bishop of Jerusalem .

Alexander was Jewish and initially became a rabbi , but converted to Christianity and was baptized in Plymouth in 1825 . An Anglican priest since 1827 , he worked in the service of the Church's Ministry Among Jewish People (CMJ) in Gdansk until 1830 and then became professor of Hebrew and rabbinical literature at King's College London . On January 21, 1842 he took office as the first bishop of the Anglo-Prussian diocese of Jerusalem, founded in 1841 .

He was succeeded by Samuel Gobat .
