Michael Graham Ruddock Sandberg, Baron Sandberg Kt CBE (born May 31, 1927 in Surrey - † July 2, 2017 ) was a British manager and politician of the Liberal Democrats . From 1977 to 1986 he was Chairman of the Board of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation . From 1997 to 2015 he was a life peer member of the House of Lords .

Life

After attending St Edward's School in Oxford , Sandberg joined the Royal Armored Corps of the British Army in 1945 and was promoted to second lieutenant in 1946. After his promotion to lieutenant in November 1947, he became an officer in the British Indian Army and served there first with the 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers (Watson's Horse) and later from January 1949 with the First King's Dragoon Guards .

At the end of 1949 he joined The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, where he was the successor to Guy Sayer from 1977 to 1986 as chairman of the board. In 1986, William Purves followed him as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). At the same time, Sandberg, who was Justice of the Peace of Hong Kong from 1972 to 1986 and was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 1977, became a board member of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank in 1977, of which he was Vice President from 1984 to 1987.

In addition, he was Treasurer of the University of Hong Kong from 1977 to 1986 and a member of the Hong Kong Executive Board from 1978 to 1986 and also Chairman of the Board of Management of the British Bank of the Middle East from 1980 to 1986, from which today's HSBC Bank Middle East emerged. Sandberg, who was also Chairman of the Board of Stewards of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club from 1981 to 1986 and became its Honorary Steward in 1986, became Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1983 .

At times, he was also a board member of the company New World Development Ltd., Winsor Ind Corp, Winsor Properties Holdings Ltd., Green Iceland Cement Ltd and AS Watson & Co Ltd. After his return to Great Britain, Sandberg, who became a Knight Bachelor in 1986 and has since had the suffix “Sir”, was also Freeman from London .

By a letters patent dated October 2, 1997, Sandberg was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Sandberg , of Passfield in the County of Hampshire . Shortly after its introduction was carried out ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house he belonged to the faction of the Liberal Democrats.

Since June 2012 Lord Sandberg was on leave of absence from attending the meetings of the House of Lords . On May 8, 2015, he voluntarily retired under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014 and left the House of Lords.
