Michael Schecker

Michael Schecker (born September 4, 1944 ) is a German linguist (linguistics of German) and neurolinguist , who dealt in particular with cognitive linguistics as well as with cognitive decline phenomena ( dementia , Alzheimer's disease ) and with child development disorders ( SLI , ADHD , ASD , childhood depression ). In Germany, Michael Schecker was involved in the development and establishment of the academic job description ' clinical linguistics / speech therapy '. In Freiburg he was one of the 'founding fathers' of the interdisciplinary "Center for Neurosciences" (ZfN) and the trinational neuroscientific network on the Upper Rhine ("Neuroscience in Freiburg", "Neurex").

Live and act

Michael Schecker studied philosophy , modern German literature and German linguistics in Cologne , Munich and Freiburg . After the state examination (subjects German and philosophy) he did his doctorate in a border area between literary studies and linguistics and habilitated in German linguistics with the thesis "Communicative aspects of grammatical change" (Venia legendi in Germanic Philology ).

From 1980 to 1982 he taught German linguistics at the University of Rennes 2 in France. 1983 followed a research stay at the Institute for German Language in Mannheim and then several years of teaching at the school for speech therapists, Freiburg. In 1996, Schecker received a professorship in Germanic Philology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , with a focus on German linguistics - neurolinguistics . There he took over the management of the Neurolinguistic Laboratory (NLL) Freiburg until 2014, which is currently part of the research area "Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences" at the Freiburg University Clinics. Schecker has been retired since 2015, but at the same time still works as a 'visiting scientist' at the 'Child and Adolescent Psychiatry' of the Freiburg University Clinics.

Among other things, Schecker was a co-applicant for the Freiburg research focus program “Development and dismantling of executive functions ”, the EU network “Control and Selection: Executive Abilities in Central Auditory Processing ” and the interdisciplinary state research focus “ Intersubjective construction and linguistic coding of pain”.

He is / was a member of the German Society for Linguistics , the French Association des germanistes de l'enseignement superieur , the Society for Cognitive Science , the Society for Aphasia Research and Treatment GAB and the German Federal Association for Clinical Linguistics BKL. He is a scientific member of the France Center of the University of Freiburg, the interdisciplinary "Neuroscientific Working Community" of the University of Freiburg and the NEUREX ("the Neuroscience network in the upper Rhine valley"). Finally, he is a founding member of the "Upper Rhine Working Group 'Cognition'" (under EUCOR) of the Universities of Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg and of the "Center for Neurosciences" (ZfN) of the University of Freiburg.

Schecker is / was also a member of the advisory board of Neurolinguistics - Journal for Aphasia Research and Therapy (in HochschulVerlag Freiburg), the series Eurogermanistik - European studies on the German language (Stauffenburg-Verlag Tübingen) and co-editor of the publication series cognitio - cognitive and neuroscientific contributions to natural Speech processing , now (2015) at Peter Lang Verlag .
