Michael Schmid (* 2. January 1988 in Stans ) is a Swiss lightweight - rowers .

Career

Schmid started rowing in 1999. In 2004 he took part in the Junior World Championships for the first time , but only reached the C final with the double foursome . After an eighth place in the one in 2005, he reached fourth place in this boat class in 2006. In 2007 the rower from the See-Club Lucerne competed in the Rowing World Cup for the first time . At the U23 World Championships in 2007, Schmid finished ninth with the double foursome. After two years without an international start, he achieved sixth place at the U23 World Championships in 2010 with the Swiss double scull.

In 2011 Schmid rowed with Raphael Jeanneret in the lightweight double sculls , the two took 16th place at the world championships . In 2012 he competed for the Olympic qualification together with Silvan Zehnder in Lucerne. The two reached sixth place, only the first two were allowed to compete in London. At the 2012 World Rowing Championships in the non-Olympic boat classes, Schmid took sixth place in the lightweight single. Schmid also started in this boat class in 2013 and took fourth place at the European Championships . As in the previous year, he was sixth at the 2013 World Championships . In 2014 he won bronze at the European Championships in Belgrade and bronze at the World Championships in Amstelveen .

In the pre-Olympic year 2015 Schmid returned to the Olympic boat class of lightweight double sculls and took tenth place with Daniel Wiederkehr at the world championships , the first eleven places were enough for Olympic qualification. In the 2016 Olympic season, Schmid and Wiederkehr took seventh place at the European Championships , and twice in eighth place in the World Cup. At the Olympic regatta in Rio de Janeiro , the Swiss only reached the C final and ultimately came in 13th.

In 2017 Schmid competed again in the lightweight single. He won the title at the European Championships and finished fourth at the World Championships . In 2018 he successfully defended his title at the European Championships . At the world championships he won silver behind the German Jason Osborne .
