Michael Strempel (born March 9, 1944 in Drasdo ; † March 1, 2018 ) was a football player in the GDR major league for BSG Wismut Gera and FC Carl Zeiss Jena . He played 15 games in the GDR national soccer team .

Athletic career

The company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive in the Lausitz town of Uebigau was Strempel's first stop in his football career. In the higher-class men's area, the defender made his debut in the 1962/63 season with the upper division SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg . There the 1.79 m tall young player was used as a defender for four games in the second half of the season. At the end of the season, the Briesker had to relegate after 13 years of membership in the GDR Oberliga. At the same time, the soccer section was spun off from the Aktivist sports club and joined the newly founded Cottbus sports club .

In the following three years Strempel played for SC Cottbus in the second-rate GDR league and was mostly used as a right defender. Although only in his early 20s, he immediately became a regular In the seasons 1963/64 and 1964/65 he was used in a total of 37 point games. At the beginning of the 1965/66 season, Strempel played all of the first eight point games. In the 8th league game on October 17, 1965, Strempel was sent off in the local derby against Vorwärts Cottbus for insulting the referee. The GDR Football Association rated this as such a serious offense that Strempel was suspended for six point games until the end of the year. Shortly before the expiry of his suspension, he signed up at SC Cottbus and switched to GDR league club Wismut Gera, who figured out good chances for promotion to the league after the first half of the season.

On March 13, 1966 Strempel stood for the first time for the Bismut-Elf in a point game on the lawn. By the end of the season, he played ten games, mostly as a central defender, and, as hoped, achieved promotion to the league with his team. Gera, however, did not have the potential to maintain its top class. At the end of the 1966/67 season, the team had to relegate as the bottom of the table after only four wins in 26 point games. Strempel had played in 19 league games and showed solid performance, which prompted the neighboring football focus FC Carl Zeiss Jena to include him in their squad for the next season.

In Jena, Strempel finally managed to fully develop his skills. After just one year, he was able to close the 1967/68 season by winning the championship. He was instrumental in this success with 25 out of 26 league games, and as a central defender he also scored three goals. It was almost enough for the double, but in the final of the GDR soccer cup Jena lost 2-1 to 1. FC Union Berlin . Strempel was also here as a central defender. 1970 saw further successes in store. Three game days before the end of the 1969/70 season, on May 9th, FC Carl Zeiss Jena was once again the champions. Strempel had taken part in all the league games so far, at the end of the season he came to the full number of 26. A week later, on May 16, 1970, Strempel was called to his first international match. In the game against Poland (1-1), he took over the position of resigned Klaus Urbanczyk in central defense . The appointment of the already 26-year-old Strempels represented a special case in the national team, because he was one of the few players who were called up without having played in a youth or in the B national team beforehand. His international career only lasted 18 months, but he made a total of 15 appearances during this time. In the encounter between the GDR and Poland on September 6, 1970 (5-0), he scored his only international goal. On October 16, 1971 he was in the qualifying game for the European Championship against Yugoslavia (0-0) for the last time in the national team. Between May 1 and November 17, 1971, Strempel played three qualifying games with the GDR Olympic team , but was not present at the 1972 finals in Munich.

In 1972, FC Carl Zeiss Jena won the GDR soccer cup, but Strempel was also missing in the final (2-1 against Dynamo Dresden). Both in the GDR national teams and in the home club, he was gradually ousted by the young players Lothar Kurbjuweit and Konrad Weise . The 1972/73 season for Strempel was the last season in Jena. At the age of 29 he said goodbye to league football. In his seven years in Jena he had played 179 competitive games for FC Carl Zeiss - 136 in the Oberliga, 19 in the FDGB Cup, 22 in the European Cup and 2 games in the Intertoto Cup . Strempel scored a total of 26 goals for the Jena team, characterized as a “tough defender”.

In the summer of 1973 Strempel went to BSG Chemie Schwarza, which had just been promoted to the GDR league . There he was initially player-coach for 18 months and rose at the end of the 1973/74 season in the third-class district league. From January 1975 exclusively in the responsibility as a coach, he managed with his team the immediate promotion. In the following years Strempel helped two other teams to rise: in 1979 the BSG Progress Pößneck and in 1988 the BSG Electronics Gera each in the Gera district league. In the 1983/84 season he looked after the GDR league club Motor Weimar , with whom he had to relegate at the end of the season, and in 1985/86 the BSG Rotasym Pößneck . During this time, Strempel worked as a sports teacher.
