Michael Sturm (* 1963 in Leck (North Friesland) ) is a German director .

Life

Michael Sturm was born in 1963 in Leck in North Frisia . He studied from 1986 to 1992 Music Theater - directed at Götz Friedrich at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg . He expanded his training through collaboration and a. with Harry Kupfer , Ruth Berghaus and Achim Freyer , whom he met in 1992 as a participant in the stage class at the Bauhaus Dessau . Since then he has worked as a freelance director, dramaturge and author.

Dramaturgically he was in charge of Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre in Ulm in 1992 , and as an author he appeared in public in 1995 with the text collage Götzendämmerung or a madman's self-talk for the Wolf-Ferrari-Theater in Ottobrunn .

As a director he worked a. a. at the state theaters in Kassel and Saarbrücken , the State Opera in Hamburg , at the stages in Linz, Bremen and Dessau. Guest performances have taken him to the National Theater in Prague, to the Opera Tirana in Albania , to the Hungarian theaters Csokonai Szinhaz in Debrecen and Nemzeti Szinhaz in Szeged , and the Macedonian National Theater in Skopje .

Michael Sturm's most important works include The Bartered Bride in 1995 in the former Theresienstadt concentration camp , Brundibár at the Vienna Chamber Opera in 1999, Fidelio in Tirana in 2007 and the world premiere of the opera Gegen die Wand at the Bremen Theater in 2008 . This production was nominated for the "European Tolerance Prize" in 2009. Among his most important employees is the outfitter Stefan Rieckhoff , with whom he staged The Bartered Bride in Dessau , Gounod's Faust in Linz and Lohengrin at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken . He worked regularly in the Freiburg Theater, where in collaboration with his designer Stefan Rieckhoff Nabucco , Gegen die Wand , and I vespri siciliani .

From 2007 to 2010 Michael Sturm taught as stage director at the Laubach Opera House . Masterclasses have taken him several times to the universities of the states of New York, West Virginia and Alabama in the USA, as well as regularly to the International Performance and Arts Institution.

His most recent productions were Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti ei Montecchi for the Lübeck Theater and the German premiere of Jacopo Foroni's opera Cristina, regina di Svezia for the Oldenburg State Theater .
