Michael Turnheim (born October 22, 1946 in Vienna , † November 27, 2009 in Paris ) was an Austrian psychoanalyst and supervisor in Paris and Vienna.

life and work

Turnheim completed a psychoanalytic training with Jacques Lacan (from whom he translated the seminar "The Psychoses"). He worked as a psychoanalyst in Vienna and Paris, had a doctorate in medicine, a specialist in neurology and psychiatry, and gave lectures on Freud, Lacan and Derrida at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, which made him a professor in 2009. Turnheim was the department head of a day clinic for psychotic and autistic children. He edited the writings of the psychoanalyst Herbert Silberer and himself published numerous titles on clinical and historical questions in psychoanalysis.

The title of the book, Sleeping With Reason, is a reference to a painting by de Goya. A critical renewal of psychoanalysis was important for his work, where he refused to be absolute and always took a critical stance. He took up the current of his time, structuralism and Derrida in particular: a text should be understood in its actual meaning and also in its reception, contradictions ( aporias ) are also allowed. One interpretation of the alien hand syndrome in stroke patients is that what is fundamentally alien to one's own body (see partial objects ) is successfully adopted in a healthy development; in the event of injury, the ability recedes. With autism, the violence of language becomes obvious, Turnheim works successfully with drawings and painting therapy.

Turnheim discovered in his writings that Freud's interpretation of grief had changed. In 1917 Freud suggested that successful mourning work could completely replace the lost object, and that the libido would become free and mobile again. The late Freud saw a lasting melancholy residue as a possibility that love would continue to exist.
