Michael Umlauf (also Umlauff ; born August 9, 1781 in Vienna ; † June 20, 1842 in Baden near Vienna ) was an Austrian composer and from 1815 a Kapellmeister at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna.

Life

The son of the composer Ignaz Umlauf became the conductor of the two Viennese court theaters and, together with the deaf Beethoven, conducted the premiere of Beethoven's 9th symphony on May 7, 1824 .

Michael Umlauf composed several stage works. Of his ballets, the “Anacreontic Divertissement” Cupid's Vengeance was premiered in the Kärntnertortheater in 1804 , the one-act play The Games of Paris on Mount Ida and Paul and Rosette or Die Winzer , his most successful play during his lifetime. The premiere of the Schiller celebration aftermath followed in 1808 at the Vienna Burgtheater, where The German Grenadier or The Medal was performed for the first time in 1812 and The Siege of Solothurn in 1819 . When and where The Tavern of Granada (built in 1812) was first performed is unknown.
