Michael Zenz

Michael Zenz (born September 30, 1945 in Minden , Westphalia ) was full professor of anesthesiology , intensive care and pain therapy at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Life

Michael Zenz passed his Abitur in 1966 at the Jesuit College Mauritius-Gymnasium in Büren . From 1966 to 1973 he studied biology and medicine at the Universities of Cologne , Mainz and Marburg .

In 1974 he was promoted to Dr. med. at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz with a doctoral thesis , for the publication of which he and Nolte received the first Carl Ludwig Schleich Prize of the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) in 1974 . From 1972 to 1973 he worked as a research assistant at the Physiological Institute of the Philipps University of Marburg under H. Fruhstorfer. After two years at the Bundeswehr Central Hospital in Koblenz , he continued his training at the Institute for Anesthesiology at the Medical University of Hanover under E. Kirchner and I. Pichlmayr. He published the first German publication on spinal opiate analgesia (1980), retarded morphine (1989) and opioids for non-tumor pain (1990). In 1981 he was at the Hannover Medical School habilitation . In 1986 he accepted the chair for anesthesiology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and head of the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Kliniken Bergmannsheil ( Berufsgenossenschaftliches Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil ), the first German university clinic for anesthesiology, intensive care and pain therapy. Since 2001 he has also been working at the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer .

Zenz was President of the Sertürner Society from 1994 to 2003 and in 1995 on the founding board (General Secretary) of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Pain Therapy (DIVS). From 2003 to 2007 Zenz was President of the German Society for the Study of Pain (DGSS) and from 1994 to 2003 a full member of the Medicines Commission of the German Medical Association .

Among other things, Zenz became known in public through the report on Mechthild Bach , who was charged with manslaughter before the Hanover Regional Court and who, according to an interim report by the court, committed suicide with morphine.

Zenz has over 200 publications, mainly on the topics of acute and chronic pain therapy , tumor pain, non-tumor pain, opioids , regional anesthesia . For more than 10 years until 2003, Zenz was the editor-in-chief of the journal “Der pain”.
