Michael Zimmermann (historian)

Michael Zimmermann (born November 17, 1951 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † January 20, 2007 in Essen ) was a German historian who has emerged through numerous publications, especially on the Porajmos , the persecution of Roma as gypsies under National Socialism .

He graduated from the state high school in Mülheim an der Ruhr and studied history, social sciences and Latin studies from 1970-77. In the first half of the 1990s Zimmermann belonged to several commissions: For example the “ Sinti and Roma ” commission of the EKD , the commissions for the redesign of the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial and the concentration camp memorials in Brandenburg as well as the Frankfurt conception commission for the Fritz- Bauer Institute . In 2001 he was one of the founders of the "Sinti and Roma" working group of the Fritz Bauer Institute. Since 2000 Zimmermann was a member of the advisory board of the Jewish Museum Westphalia in Dorsten .

From 1986 to 1994 Zimmermann worked as a historian at the Old Synagogue in Essen . Since 2000 he has been a private lecturer in modern and contemporary history at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Zimmermann was also visiting professor at the Central European University Budapest (summer 2003) and at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna (2003/2004).

Zimmermann was co-editor of the journals Romani Studies (formerly: Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society ) and WerkstattGeschichte . He died of cancer.
