Michael von Fröhlich

Michael von Fröhlich (born January 9, 1740 in Marburg , † April 25, 1814 in Opava ) was an imperial field marshal lieutenant .

Life

In 1778 he was a major in St. George's Border Infantry No. 65 in Croatia . In the War of the Bavarian Succession , he made 110 prisoners in an attack on the entrenchment near Dittersbach .

In 1783 he was made a lieutenant colonel . In 1786 he was included in the Carlstadt Lican Border Regiment. In the winter of 1787 to 1788 he was assigned to secure the border. in June 1788 he was standing at the Prelog Pass and then marched against Liono with 1200 men. In the summer on the Una he was able to drive the Turks back to Navula Castle. In October 1788 was promoted to colonel . As such, he defended the post of Dobroselo in Croatia with Colonel Weiler on May 27, 1789. The two colonels defended the place with only 1,500 men and 6 cannons. The enemy's army was 10,000 men. Within ten hours, the latter attacked nine times with his superior power. But Colonels Fröhlich and Weiler held out bravely that 500 of the enemy remained in the square. That night he set fire to the guard and retired to Maßin.

In 1793 Fröhlich was promoted to major general and transferred to Germany. He then distinguished himself there on several occasions, especially in September 1796 when the French general and commander of the Rhine and Moselle army Moreau had to retreat across the Rhine, he was able to beat the French general Tarreau three times. In 1799 he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant (comparable to the rank of lieutenant general ). During the campaign of 1799 in Italy he fought near Verona , Legnano and Magnano . He occupied Fossano and distinguished himself in the Battle of Novi .

Then Fröhlich received Infantry Regiment No. 28 (formerly Waiting Life ). He took over command in Tuscany and in the Papal States . Ancona , under French occupation, was besieged and conquered under his leadership. He was briefly detained in the Brno Citadel in 1800 for an alleged insult to the Russian flag during the activities around Ancona. From 1803 to 1809 he was in command of the Olomouc Fortress . He retired there and died a few years later at the age of 74 in Troppau.

Happy married Elisabeth von Kleefeld , a daughter of Field Marshal Lieutenant Wenzel Hnogek von Kleefeld (1713–1779).
