Scientific work

Transnational corporations

His most recently published writings relate to the economic and legal framework conditions of transnational corporations . He examines the structure of global corporate networks and the tax strategies of global corporations .

In the two books "Value-oriented tax planning and corporate management in the global economy" from 2012 (written together with Stefan Bach from the German Institute for Economic Research Berlin ) and "Value management and tax planning in the global economy" from 2006 (written with Stefan Bach among others) are the methodological limits of valuation ( discounted cash flow ) and the tax strategies of multinational corporations in focus.

It is shown in which way the tax structures are geared towards the main objective of increasing company value. Spectacular paths of profit shifting and tax avoidance be limited: since the nineties of the last decade observable transfer of patents to subsidiaries in tax havens , the export of capital in the financing of foreign investments and the design of intercompany transfer prices in intragroup trade ( transfer pricing ).

Economic integration of economic regions

The economic integration of the economic regions in Asia , North America and Europe was a further research focus in the period 2007–2010. In cooperation with Bernadette Andreosso-O'Callaghan from the University of Limerick ( Ireland ) and William X. Wei from MacEwan University in Edmonton ( Canada ), he dealt with technology transfer and the tax framework for research and development in China . In the context of the debate about the different forms of capitalism (varieties of capitalism), state-controlled capitalism was described as a variant of the market model: “China's remaining elements of state regulation seem to suggest that China's development represents a unique variety of the coordinated market economy model ". The study builds on previous studies (2007) on the investment strategies of German companies in Ireland and Eastern Europe .

Criticism of capitalism

The considerations on the varieties of market economy and the competition for the world's cheapest locations resulted in a criticism of financial capitalism . In the book "Where is capitalist society drifting - a way of life in crisis", published in 2019, not only the barriers of market rationality, but also the agency of multinational corporations are shown. At the center of his analysis are the colorful tax structures of multinationals and the importance of tax havens in the global economy . “The problem is that the global activities of the transnational corporations are opposed to nation states whose democratic control is limited to their own state territory.” (Preface, 8). The plea is therefore for the strengthening of multilateral institutions and for a creative state that lays down the rules of the market from a democratic perspective.
