Life

Johann Kaspar Michael von der Leyen came from the Moselle noble family von der Leyen . He was the son of Bartholomew von der Leyen (1485-1540, kurkölnischer Council, Chancellor, steward and bailiff in Andernach) and his wife Catherine of Palandt (1490-1554). His brother Johann (1510–1567) was archbishop and elector of Trier , Bartholomäus cathedral dean in Trier and canon in Münster and Georg canon in Trier and archdeacon in Trier and Karden. In 1528 there was a dispute between Michael and the later canon Arnold de Bever and in 1532 with the canon Johann von Visbeck over the prebend of the late canon Florence von Langen. The cathedral chapter ended this conflict by setting up another prebend for Arnold. On June 10, 1559 Michael renounced in favor of his brother Bartholomäus and married Eva von Pallandt († 1569) in 1560 . The marriage resulted in two daughters and the son Damian († 1636, ∞ Anna Katharina Walpott von Bassenheim). They were the grandparents of Electors Karl Kaspar and Damian Hartard . Michael was bailiff in Kobern and from 1560 he was a councilor of the Electorate of Cologne and Trier . The castle Adendorf was in his possession. He became the progenitor of the later Prince von der Leyen.
