Maximilian Herbert Gottlieb Schultz ( Russian Максимилиан Фёдорович Шульц * December 25, 1861 jul. / 6. January  1862 greg. In Kronstadt , † the summer of 1917 in Vyritsa ) was a vice admiral of the Imperial Russian Navy .

Life

At the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War , von Schulz commanded the destroyer Smelii , which was stationed in Port Arthur . After Captain Nikolai von Essen was transferred to the ship of the line Sevastopol , the position on the cruiser Nowik became vacant and von Schulz took it over.

In the Battle of the Yellow Sea , the Russian fleet tried to escape the Japanese blockade of Port Arthur. The attempt failed in a battle with the Japanese fleet, in which the Nowik was slightly damaged by three hits and two men of the crew died. Most of the Russian ships turned back to Port Arthur after two hours of fighting and the death of the squadron chief.

The Novik and several other Russian ships tried to flee to the German base in Kiautschou . All ships except the Nowik were interned. Von Schulz left Tsingtau and tried to circumnavigate the Japanese islands in the east to reach Vladivostok . He wanted to make a stop in front of Korsakov to stash coal. He was put to sea battle in front of Korsakov by the protected cruisers Tsushima and Chitose . Because of the artillery superiority of the enemy, von Schulz decided to sink the Nowik himself. With the survivors of his ship, he then set out on foot across Sakhalin and then by boat to Vladivostok.

Schulz died in Wyriza in 1917 when he was murdered in a burglary.
