Michalis Mouroutsos ( Greek Μιχάλης Μουρούτσος , also Michail Mouroutsos ; born February 29, 1980 in Athens ) is a former Greek Taekwondo and Olympic champion . He started in the weight class up to 58 kilograms.

Career

Mouroutsos played international fights from 1997. His greatest successes were celebrated in 2000. First he secured the title at the European Championships and shortly afterwards became Olympic champion in Sydney . In the final battle for gold, he defeated Gabriel Esparza 4-2. His best results at world championships were reaching the quarter-finals in 2003 and 2005 . At the 2004 Olympic Games in his native Athens, he also reached the quarter-finals, in which he was defeated by Tamer Bayoumi 2-8 . He completed his last international tournament participation in 2008.
