Michel Ange-Charles Tognini (born September 30, 1949 in Vincennes , France ) is a former French astronaut and former director of the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne.

biography

Tognini received a degree in mathematics from the Grenoble Military School in 1970 . After graduating from the French Air Force Academy École de l'air in 1973, Tognini received training as a fighter pilot. From 1974 to 1981 he served in the French Air Force . In 1982 he joined the Empire Test Pilot School at Boscombe Down in the UK . After completing his training, he returned to France as a test pilot.

Astronaut activity

In 1985 Tognini was selected as one of seven finalists by the French space agency CNES in its astronaut corps. In August 1986 he was nominated for the substitute team of Mir-Aragatz . From November 1986 he was preparing for this mission at the Yuri Gagarin cosmonaut training center in the Soviet star city , possibly representing Jean-Loup Chrétien .

From 1989 to 1990 he worked for the Hermes program in Toulouse , France.

In 1991 he returned to Russia to prepare for his first mission, Mir-Antares . On July 27, 1992, Tognini took off on board Soyuz TM-15 for the Mir space station . After 14 days he returned to Earth with Soyuz TM-14 .

In 1995 he came to the Johnson Space Center in Houston . After completing his training as a mission specialist, he worked in the planning department for the International Space Station (ISS), for the robotics department and as a liaison officer ( CAPCOM ) in the mission control center.

On July 23, 1999, he flew into space aboard the Columbia space shuttle as part of the STS-93 mission . The Chandra X-ray telescope was deployed during the five-day mission .

In November 1999 he became an ESA astronaut, returning to the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne, but was still an active ESA astronaut.

In May 2003 he left the European Astronaut Corps as an active astronaut . From May 2003 to December 2004 he was chief astronaut at ESA and thus head of the astronaut department of the European Space Agency (ESA). From January 2005 to November 1, 2011 he was director of the European Astronaut Center in Cologne .

Private

Michel Tognini is married and has four children.
