Mieczysław Lesz

Mieczysław Stanisław Lesz (born May 20, 1911 in Lviv ; † December 21, 1998 ) was a Polish politician of the Polish United Workers' Party PZPR ( Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza ) in the People's Republic of Poland , who was minister for domestic trade between 1957 and 1965 and subsequently from 1965 to 1968 minister without portfolio.

Life

Lesz began studying mechanical engineering at the Lemberg Polytechnic in 1930 and joined the Communist Youth Association KZMP (Komunistyczny Związek Młodzieży Polskiej) as a member. He graduated as a mechanical engineer but was arrested and imprisoned in 1934 for his political activities. At the beginning of the Second World War he volunteered for military service in the army , but was arrested shortly afterwards by the German secret state police in Warsaw and was imprisoned in the Groß-Rosen concentration camp until 1945 .

After the end of the war, Lesz joined the Polish United Workers' Party PZPR ( Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza ) , which was founded in December 1948, and served as vice-chairman of the State Planning Commission between 1953 and 1956. On August 17, 1957, he took over the office of Minister for Internal Trade from Marian Minor and held this office until December 14, 1965, after which he was replaced by Edward Sznajder . At the fourth party congress from June 15 to 20, 1964, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the PZPR and was a member of this body until the fifth party congress from November 11 to 16, 1968. From December 14, 1965 to April 12, 1968, he was Minister without Portfolio and at the same time Vice-Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the Council of Ministers. He also served temporarily as Vice President of the Polish-Chinese Friendship Society.

After the March 1968 riots in Poland , Lesz resigned from the government and completed his doctorate and habilitation in economics , and from 1970 to 1985 he was a professor at the Economic Institute of the Chemical Industry (Instytucie Ekonomiki Przemysłu Chemicznego) .

For his services in the People's Republic of Poland, he was awarded the title of commander in 1947 and a commander with a star in 1964 of the Polonia Restituta Order (Order Odrodzenia Polski) .
