Miguel Calmon du Pin e Almeida, Marquês de Abrantes (born October 26, 1796 in Santo Amaro , Bahia ; † September 13, 1865 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a politician in the Brazilian Empire , who was among other things foreign minister several times and between 1838 and his death 1865 Senator of the Brazilian Empire .

Life

Miguel Calmon du Pin e Almeida completed a law degree at the University of Coimbra , founded in 1290 , and graduated in 1821. In the following year he became first secretary of the provisional government council of Bahia in 1822 and held this office until 1823. In 1827 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Câmara dos Deputados) , which initially belonged until 1833. On November 20, 1827 he took over the office of Minister of Finance (Ministro da Fazenda) for the first time , which he held until June 15, 1828. He acted again between September 25, 1828 and December 4, 1829 as Minister of Finance and then from December 4, 1829 to September 23, 1830 for the first time as Foreign Minister (Ministro das Relações Exteriores) . He held the office of finance minister again between September 19, 1837 and April 16, 1839 and was again a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1838 to 1840.

In the fourth legislative period, Almeida became a senator of the Brazilian Empire for the first time in 1840 and was a member of the Senate until his death in the 12th legislative period in 1865. From March 23, 1841 to January 20, 1843 he again held the post of finance minister and was raised to the nobility in 1849 as Visconde de Abrantes . In 1854 he was also raised to Marquês de Abrantes . Most recently, he acted again as Foreign Minister from May 30, 1862 to January 15, 1864.

For his services he was also awarded the Order of the Rose (Imperial Ordem da Rosa) , the Imperial Order of the Cross (Ordem Imperial do Cruzeiro) , the Order of Our Lady (Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Viçosa) , the Knightly Order of St. . Mauritius and Lazarus (Ordine dei SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro) and the Leopold Order.
