Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez SJ (German: Michael Augustin Pro Juárez), (born  January 13, 1891 in Concepción del Oro , Mexico ; † November 23, 1927 in Mexico City ) was a Catholic priest and martyr who was beatified by the Catholic Church has been.

Life

Miguel Pro entered the Society of Jesus on August 10, 1911 . On August 15, 1913, he took his religious vows . He studied from 1914 in the USA and from 1915 to 1920 philosophy in Granada , Spain . From 1922 he studied theology in Sarriá ( Barcelona ) and from 1924 in Enghien , Belgium . It was here that he was ordained a priest on August 30, 1925 . He returned to Mexico on July 6, 1926. Due to the Mexican Revolution and the persecution of Catholic priests during the presidency of Plutarco Elías Calles (1924-1928), he worked in the Catholic self-protection organization Liga Nacional para la Defensa de la Libertad Religiosa . The clashes between church and state finally culminated in a particularly bloody civil war, the Guerra Cristera . Several priests were also executed. During this time, Pro performed his priestly ministry in disguise and underground. After the assassination of General Alvaro Obregon , he was arrested as an alleged perpetrator on 18 November 1927 - although Obregón for him personally used and his innocence testified - on 23 November with three other defendants executed . Most of the priests persecuted in Mexico lived in rural areas. Michael Pro worked in the capital and was executed there on the personal orders of the President. As a result, his death received special attention and political explosiveness. Thousands upon thousands came to the laying out and burial. Michael Pro is buried in the Sagrada Familia church in Mexico City.

In 1934 the Archdiocese of Mexico City began collecting testimonies of the life and death of pros and initiated the process of beatification. The first biography appeared in German as early as 1936.

Miguel Pro SJ was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988 . The process of canonization is ongoing. His feast day is celebrated in the Catholic Church on November 23rd. This is also his feast day on the calendar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .
