Mihály Borbély (* 1956 in Szentendre ) is a Hungarian jazz , world and folk musician. In addition to his main instruments, the clarinet and saxophone, he also plays Tárogató , Kaval , Dvojnice , Fujara , Ocarina , Bombard and Zurna .

life and career

Borbély studied at the Bartók Conservatory and the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest . He was one of the founding members of the Vujicsics group . At concerts in Hungary, all of Europe, the USA and Australia he played with Hungarian and international musicians such as Attila László , Kálmán Oláh , Béla Szakcsi Lakatos , Trilok Gurtu , Herbie Mann , Paul Bley , Steve Coleman , Michael Brecker , David Liebman , Joe Lovano and Péter Eötvös together. In 1988 he was honored as the best solo musician at the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival.

He leads two of his own quartets: the Borbély Muhely and the Quartet B and works in a duo with the pianist Károly Binder . He is active in the field of folk music with the Bokros Ensemble .

Since 1986 he has been teaching at the Bartók Conservatory and since 1990 at the Jazz Department of the Franz Liszt Music Academy, which he directed from 1997 to 2000. In addition, he also taught a. a. at the Birmingham Conservatoire , the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Conservatoire de Lyon .
