Mike Flanagan (ice hockey player)

Mike Flanagan (born November 20, 1968 in Orangeville , Ontario ) is a Canadian - British ice hockey player and coach. Until December 2019 he was a member of the coaching staff of the Schwenninger Wild Wings from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).

Career

Flanagan spent his playing career mainly in North America, including in the ECHL and CHL. 1995/96 he played for the Slough Jets in Great Britain, in the following season for the Telford Tigers also in the United Kingdom.

Between 2001 and 2006, Flanagan worked as the head coach of the Grand Rapids Owls in the CSHL and then moved to the NAHL, where he held various positions (head coach, assistant coach and manager) for the St. Louis Bandits, the Kenai River Brown Bears and the Wichita Falls Wildcats was active.

From 2010 to 2012 he was an assistant coach on the staff of the Norfolk Admirals from the American Hockey League (AHL) and contributed to winning the Calder Cup in his second season .

In 2012 Flanagan became head coach of the Italian first division club HC Valpellice . In the 2012/13 season he led the team to win the national cup competition and the championship finals. He was then named coach of the year.

After two years he moved within Serie A to HC Neumarkt , where he was introduced as the new head coach in June 2014. In November of the same year, the separation took place after Neumarkt had won only four wins in 14 championship games under his leadership.

Flanagan returned to North America and became assistant coach of the Gwinnett Gladiators (later renamed Atlanta Gladiators) from the ECHL in late December 2014 .

In July 2016 he was hired by the Nürnberg Ice Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) as an assistant coach. In September 2018, after Kevin Gaudet was released from work, he took over the training operations of the Nuremberg ice hockey club until further notice.

For the 2019/20 season he was hired by the Schwenninger Wild Wings as assistant coach and dismissed in December 2019 together with head coach Paul Thompson
