Mike Lawrence

Mike Lawrence (born December 3, 1945 in Yonkers , † January 1, 1983 in New York City ) was an American fusion and jazz trumpeter .

Lawrence learned to trumpet from the age of seven and studied at the University of North Texas, Denton . On the New York jazz scene, he appeared in clubs like Slug's Saloon and Minton's Playhouse , where he was discovered by Joe Henderson and brought into his band in the late 1960s, to be heard on his albums The Kicker (1967) and Power to the People (1969). He also played with Gil Evans ( Blues in Orbit , 1969), Machito and in 1973 with Roswell Rudd and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra ( Numatik Swing Band ). In 1974 he joinedLarry Coryell at the Montreux Jazz Festival .

In the late 1970s, Lawrence was still on recordings with Chuck Israels ' National Jazz Ensemble, Zbigniew Seifert , José Mangual , Hank Crawford and Bob James ; In 1977 he was a member of the all-star formation The Second All Star Trumpet Spectacular (with John D'Earth , John Eckert , Tom Harrell , Danny Hayes , Waymon Reed, among others ). He also performed at Seventh Avenue South in New York in the late 1970s. Between 1967 and 1980 he was involved in around forty recording sessions in the field of jazz. Lawrence died of complications from cancer at the age of 37. In 1987 the album Nightwind was released posthumously . a. with Steve Gadd , Will Lee , Hiram Bullock , Dave Weckl , Herbie Hancock and Bob James in the last years of his life.
