Mike Reno
Mike Reno (born Joseph Michael Rynoski on January 8, 1955 in New Westminster , British Columbia ) is a Canadian musician , singer and lead singer of the rock band Loverboy .
Career
Mike Reno began playing drums at the age of 12 and also taught himself to play guitar. According to his own statement, he learned “ a lot about structuring harmonies and things ” in the choir while he was at school and at the age of 13 he played drums in his brother's band called The Blue Web . Until the early 1970s, he was also active in school bands and cover bands such as Morning Glory and Synergy , later also with guitarist Jack Stoltz at Spunk .
After graduating from Penticton Secondary School , he moved to Calgary and tried to improve his singing and songwriting while he worked in other bands - in 1976, for example, as a singer with the Canadian band Hammersmith .
In 1978, he replaced the lead singer of the band Moxy from Toronto and sang on their fourth album Under the Lights . The album did not sell well, which was attributed to changes within the band, but also to Reno's vocal style and so this collaboration was short-lived.
Reno then returned to Vancouver and played there as a drummer for a new band, under the direction of former Street Art guitarist Paul Dean . Dean made him the lead singer and formed the band Loverboy. There were also keyboardist Doug Johnson , bassist Scott Smith and drummer Matthew Frenette , who had also played with Paul Dean at Streetheart. Loverboy released their debut album of the same name in 1980 and were one of the best-selling rock bands of the time until the mid-1980s. Reno has been actively involved in the band's songwriting from the start and is also featured as a lyricist on the band's most famous songs such as Turn Me Loose , Working for the Weekend , When It's Over, or This Could Be the Night . At the 2009 Juno Awards, Reno was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of Loverboy . Reno is still active at Loverboy today.
From the mid-1980s, Reno also worked on various film scores. In 2004 Reno released his first solo album titled Renovation .
Mike Reno's son Alex was born in 1988 and is from his first marriage.
