Michael Ira Shub (born August 17, 1943 in Brooklyn ) is an American mathematician .

Life

Shub studied at Columbia College with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and at the University of California, Berkeley , where he made his master's degree in 1966 and received his doctorate in 1967 with Stephen Smale ( Endomorphisms of compact differentiable manifolds ). In 1967 he became a lecturer and then assistant professor at Brandeis University and in 1971 he became an assistant professor and in 1973 an associate professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz . From 1973 he was Associate Professor and from 1975 Professor at Queens College, City University of New York , which he remained until 1986 when he became a member of the Thomas J. Watson Research Center of IBM . He has been a professor at the University of Toronto since 2004 .

He deals with dynamic systems (where he worked with Charles C. Pugh , Stephen Smale , Morris Hirsch , among others ), chaos theory, and complexity theory in analysis (where he worked with Lenore Blum and Smale).

From 1972 to 1974 he was a Sloan Fellow . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid ( Ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems ). In 2000 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
