Milagro Sala

Milagro Amalia Ángela Sala (born January 27, 1964 ) is a leader of the Tupac Amaru Neighborhood Association , which is part of the Association of State Officials of the Argentine Province of Jujuy . She is a leading figure in the Movimiento piquetero in Argentina.

On January 16, 2016, Sala was arrested on suspicion of fraud and illegal conspiracy. The reason was an alleged misappropriation of public funds amounting to 29,000,000 pesos (over 1.7 million euros) to help those in need.

In the UN Working Group Against Arbitrary Detention (GAD) , some human rights organizations, including Amnesty International , criticized the Argentine government's actions in the case of Salas' detention. The government saw the judgment as a recommendation for action.

Life

Sala was born in the city of San Salvador de Jujuy . When she was 15, she discovered she had been adopted and abandoned in hospital by her biological mother. This realization was the reason that Sala left her family and was in a criminal environment, which is why she was arrested at the age of 18. In prison, she organized a hunger strike to cook better food for her female inmates , which she was able to enforce. Sala spent eight months in prison advising prostitutes on how to improve their living conditions and change their field of activity.

As a result, Sala joined the Argentine Trade Union Confederation CTA . She became known for her leadership position in the Asociacion barrial Tupac Amaru, an NGO in the Jujuy Province . This influence caused conflicts with conservative politicians. Sala has been charged with various crimes, including death threats against Senator Gerardo Morales. In 2009, she denied allegations of involvement in an attack against Morales, stating that the allegations were politically motivated and without evidence.

Sala is the mother of two own and twelve adopted children.

Asociacion barrial Tupac Amaru

Tupac Amaru is an organization with 70,000 members that provides shelter, food, education and medical care to the needy in Jujuy Province. The NGO consists mainly of indigenous people from the Kolla people and draws on the legacy of historical figures such as Tupac Amaru , Che Guevara and Eva Perón . The organization represents a socialist policy similar to that of Bolivian President Evo Morales .

Tupac Amaru receives 7.9 million pesos per month as subsidy for social housing from the Argentine government. By 2009, 3,000 apartments had been built with it. The organization also manages six factories with a total of 5,000 employees, where construction materials, tools and textiles are manufactured. It finances two schools and a clinic. Tupac Amaru has established a total of 16 branches in other parts of Argentina, such as Salta , Santiago del Estero , Tucumán , Buenos Aires , and Mendoza .

Much of the allegations against the organization, and she herself, Sala attributes to racism .

In 2015 Gerardo Morales was elected governor. Sala started a demonstration on the main square of Jujuy when he was inaugurated and refused to leave the square even after a month. She was eventually arrested and charged with disturbing public order.

Gerardo Morales also ordered that funds must be spent through bank accounts so that this can be traced. Sala refused to do this.

Amnesty International found that Sala had been criminalized for claiming her right to freedom of expression and peaceful demonstration and, like other human rights organizations, called for the protection of Sala's freedom and right to protest.

Milagro Sala had been on remand and house arrest since January 18, 2016. In 2019 Sala was sentenced to 13 years in prison for running an illegal organization. She insists on her innocence. She connects the process with the radical persecution and austerity policies of President Mauricio Marci. The verdict was heavily criticized, among other things, for the fact that the public prosecutor's office could not give a chronological classification for the offenses.

Individual evidence

  1. a b We Magazine “Milagro” is Spanish for “miracle” which is what many think Milagro Sala has accomplished. Like other jobless groups in Argentina her organization, Tupac Amaru (named after a revolutionary 18th century Inca), received money from the government. But unlike most of them, the organization of this diminutive Indigenous woman has gained the love and respect of her people.

@1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / www.tupacamaru.org.ar
