Model of the TCG Heybeliada

The Ada or Milgem class ( Turkish Milli Gemi , German: "National ship") is a class of Turkish corvettes and frigates . The ships are intended for use in coastal waters, have features of stealth technology and are to be built with domestic resources as far as possible.

The first ship, the TCG Heybeliada , was launched on September 27, 2008 after almost three years of construction and put into service on September 27, 2011. On the same day the construction of the next ship, the TCG Büyükada , began. The TCG Büyükada and TCG Burgazada have been in service since 2018. A total of eight corvettes and four frigates are planned.

Development of the Milgem program

The first ideas for own warship production, for which a foundation should be established, emerged in the 1970s. Some foundations, some of which were linked to a specific type of weapon , were established, but after the Cyprus crisis resulted in an extensive arms embargo , the purposes of such foundations changed insofar as they pursued maritime projects, so that more priority requirements prevented an extensive naval project. The first attempt for the Milgem project was made in 1990, but it could not be implemented due to political disagreements and frequent changes of government. When the project was officially started in 1996, the original plan was to locally build the German MEKO A-100 from Blohm + Voss , which followed the very successful MEKO 200 , of which Turkey already had eight ships in service.

At the beginning of the new century, the partnership with Blohm + Voss was dissolved and the Turkish Navy decided to take over the design and development of its own corvettes. In Istanbul , the Navy has been coordinating the development and construction work for the Milgem project since March 12, 2004. Milgem's concept and mission profile is similar to that of the Littoral Combat Ship ( LCS-1 ), conceived in the United States by Lockheed Martin as a first representative of the next generation of warships. The focus is on military, coastal-based capacities related to asymmetric warfare .

The Ada-class corvette / F-100-class frigate

Of the twelve Milgem-class warships, eight will be classified as Corvettes under the Ada-class designation , while four will be classified as frigates under the F-100-class designation .

The F-100 class will have a slightly larger fuselage and be equipped with versatile weapon systems, including the Mk.41 VLS and the ESSM, which is more compact and lighter than its predecessor, the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow . The F-100 class will serve as a test platform for the new class of four domestically developed anti-aircraft frigates of the Turkish Navy, known under the program name TF-2000 . The experience and technological knowledge gained through the Milgem project will play an important role in the design and development process of the TF-2000 frigates .

Ship christening

The TCG Heybeliada (F-511), the lead ship of the Milgem-class corvettes and frigates, was launched on September 27, 2008 as part of a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the fleet commanders. After successful testing, the TCG Heybeliada was put into service in spring 2011.

In the meantime, the production of the TCG Büyükada (F-512), the second ship of this class, has also been completed. It entered service on September 27, 2013. The F-512 received the Aselsan radar instead of the SMART-S Mk2 .

export

According to a report by the TV broadcaster CNN Türk on the occasion of the ship's christening on September 27, 2008, the navies of Canada , Pakistan , Ukraine and a number of countries from South America have expressed their interest in the ships of the Milgem class. The Pakistani Navy will receive four Milgem-class corvettes over a ten-year timeframe, three of which will be locally produced.
