The Millstone River is a small river in New Jersey , it is the largest tributary of the Raritan River . The river has its source in western Monmouth County and flows north through Mercer County and then southern Somerset County . It flows through parts of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park and is dammed near Princeton to Lake Carnegie .

There have been records of the numerous floods in the Millstone River Basin for about 200 years. One of the most violent and well-documented was caused by Hurricane Floyd in September 1999 .

The drinking water for around 10,000 households in central New Jersey is treated from the river system . New Jersey American Water is responsible for drinking water treatment and distribution .
