Miloslav Stingl (born December 19, 1930 in Bílina ; † May 11, 2020 in Prague ) was a Czech ethnologist and non-fiction author .

Life

Stingl studied ethnology and archeology in Prague . He wrote his first dissertation on the religion of the South American Mapuche Indians. He also received his doctorate as Dr. jur. as well as Dr. phil and was a full professor at Charles University in Prague. His main scientific areas were the Indians of North and South America and the inhabitants of the Polynesian and Melanesian islands. In these areas, Stingl presented new research results which he published in specialist books. Because of his scientific work, he was appointed a member of the Czech , English and French Academy of Sciences .

On his travels in 150 countries, he has written books that have been translated into 20 languages ​​and have a print run of 18 million copies. He is best known among German readers for his works on Indian and South Sea topics. In his books, Miloslav Stingl combines personal experiences with imparting knowledge about the life, customs and traditions of peoples. In addition, Miloslav Stingl has also written books about his hometown Prague and topics from Bohemian history . Together with Roland Herrmann, he designed a 33-part series about his travels for German TV radio .
