Mirandés (also lhéngua mirandesa ) is one of the Romance languages and is spoken in northeastern Portugal near the Spanish border. The language area includes the villages of the Miranda do Douro area (not the city itself) and the localities of the Vimioso , Mogadouro and Bragança areas . Mirandés belongs to the group of Asturleonesian languages, so it is not a dialect of Portuguese , and is spoken by around 15,000 people (as of 2000). The independent development of this language began in the middle of the 12th century.

There are the dialects Normal-Mirandés , Grenz-Mirandés and Sendinés-Mirandés .

administration

The Portuguese Parliament approved the use of Mirandés in local administrations on September 17, 1998, including in official acts (Law 7/99 of January 29, 1999).

media

Mirandés is not represented in the media, apart from a few articles in the local press.

The district administration of Miranda do Douro moved some books on and Mirandés. In addition, three volumes of the Asterix comic series have been published on Mirandés.

music

The folk music group Galandum Galundaina sings exclusively in this language, both on their phonograms and at their national and international guest performances. Like Galandum Galundaina, the rock band Picä Tumilho comes from Sendim and sings exclusively in Mirandés. Various folk dance groups and other music bands from villages around Miranda do Douro sing songs in whole or in part in Mirandés.
