Mircea Ion Snegur (born January 17, 1940 in Trifăneşti , Floreşti Rajon ) is a Moldovan politician.

Life

Mircea Snegur studied at the Agricultural Institute in Chișinău . In 1964 he became a member of the Communist Party of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic . As an agricultural engineer, he worked at various state farms and collective farms of the Moldavian SSR. In the second half of the 1980s Snegur was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Moldovan Communist Party and later General Secretary of the Supreme Soviet of Moldova.

In the course of the collapse of the Soviet Union , he proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Moldova on August 27, 1991 . In the presidential election on December 8, 1991, he was the only candidate to be elected president with 98% of the vote . In 1997 he was replaced by Petru Lucinschi .
