Mirko Basaldella
Mirko Basaldella (born September 28, 1910 in Udine , Italy , † November 24, 1969 in Cambridge , Massachusetts , USA ) was an Italian-American sculptor , painter and draftsman.
Life
Mirko Basaldella usually called himself only "Mirko". He came from a family of artists, his brothers Afro and Dino Basaldella were also artists of international standing.
Mirko Basaldella studied art at the Accademia di belle arti di Firenze and at the Scuola di arti applicate di Monza with Arturo Martini . He worked with Martini in Monza from 1930 to 1932. From 1932 to 1934 both brothers Afro and Mirko worked in Arturo Martini's studio in Milan .
Mirko had his first important exhibition in October 1928 when he and his two brothers Dino and Afro Basaldella and Alessandro Filipponi took part in the I ° Mostra della Scuola friulana d'avanguardia (1st exhibition of the Friulian avant-garde school).
In 1934 Mirko moved to Rome . In Rome he exhibited with his brother and other artists at the Comet gallery . Also in 1934 his work was exhibited in the Galleria Sabatello in Rome. He mainly made bronze sculptures. In 1936 he had his first solo exhibition at the Comet gallery . Mirko also took part in the Venice Biennale in 1936 and exhibited in the same year with his brother Afro at the Mint Gallery in Turin . In the following years Mirko had exhibitions in Rome and New York .
In the years 1946 to 1947 Mirko experimented with the post- cubist pictorial language and one based on metaphysical painting .
Between 1948 and 1954 Mirko had numerous solo exhibitions in New York, Rome and Milan and created a number of monumental sculptures. Mirko was a participant in documenta 1 (1955) and documenta II (1959) in Kassel .
In 1957 Mirko moved to the USA and was director of the design workshop (sculpture) at Harvard University in Boston until his death in 1969 . In 1958 he was awarded an Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . In 1961 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
