Sarah Porter, founder of the school

Sarah Porter (born August 17, 1813 in Farmington; † February 18, 1900 ibid) was a well-known American educator and founder of the renowned private school for girls.

Sarah Porter was the daughter of the community leader and preacher Noah Porter (1781–1866) and his wife Mehitable "Hetty" Meigs (1786–1874). She studied at Farmington Academy and later at Yale College , one of the colleges of Yale University . As a professor , she later taught at schools in Massachusetts , New York, and Pennsylvania . On her return to Farmington, in 1843, she founded Miss Porter's School for girls , one of the first colleges for women in the United States . Sarah Porter was seen as an opponent of women's suffrage , but was a supporter of the education of young women. Her older brother, Noah Porter (1811-1892), was president of Yale College from 1871 to 1886 .
