biography

Grandmaster Gareth formed the band in 1996 with his friend Sam Minnear in Birmingham. They became part of the local music scene, which they support very much to this day. The name comes from a 1968 children's book, The Magic Roundabout Annual . It is about a kitten named Misty who befriends a dog.

The band members are all trained musicians and mostly live in the Moseley district of Birmingham . They call the Jug of Ale club their spiritual home , where they perform regularly. In 2005 the band toured extensively in the UK, with trips to continental Europe. They opened up for The Zutons and The Magic Numbers . Your manager is Mathew Priest, who used to be the drummer for the band Dodgy .

The current album, The Black Hole , was produced by Richard March of Bentley Rhythm Ace and Matthew Eaton of Pram .

Occasionally Gareth tours with a smaller band than Misty's Little Adventure .

show

Grandmaster Gareth is the band's "mastermind". He underlines his dramatic singing with theatrical gestures and facial expressions. The band mostly accompanies him very intensely and lively. Every now and then the "right" instruments are supplemented with samples and toy instruments. In contrast to Gareth's (apparently) extremely serious performance is that of the dancer Erotic Volvo . He is carrying a loose red sack on which a multitude of stuffed light blue gloves are attached - some interpret him as a giant dildo, others as a monster. He jumps through the band and audience like crazy and drives both of them.

Musical influences

Gareth names the Birmingham bands Pram , Broadcast , Dog Food and Novak as early influences . The seven-piece band Novak had a similar "anything goes" attitude combined with solid musical craftsmanship like Misty's.

Other influences include Raymond Scott , Julian Cope , The Beatles , The Specials , Joe Meek, and Can .

Solo activities

In 2003 Gareth recorded the solo album "Grandmaster Gareth Presents ... An Introduction to Minute Melodies", combined with a John Peel session called "Grandmaster Gareth's Monster Melody". A second album with melodies and songs that go about a minute was released under the title "The Party Sounds of Grandmaster Gareth".

In 2004, Grandmaster Gareth produced an album for the anti-folk musician Jeffrey Lewis , which has not yet been released.
