Jeffrey Lewis (2006)

Jeffrey Lewis (* 1975 in New York City ) is an American singer-songwriter and comic book artist. He became known as part of the anti-folk movement.

Musical style

Jeffrey Lewis' style is determined by the folk and punk scenes in New York, especially Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side , although it also refers to other sources such as the British band Crass . He grew up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and his songs are very much influenced by this environment. He also deals with the history of this music and is considered to be an excellent expert on the history of this scene. He processes his knowledge in thoroughly (self) ironic songs like The Complete History of Punk . He sings about some of his musical influences in songs such as The Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song (alluding toLeonard Cohen's song "Chelsea Hotel # 2") and The History of The Fall . As with Cohen, Lewis lyrics are very complex, often the combination of a depressive worldview with the hope of improvement, combined with piercing puns.

Life

Lewis attended Purchase College and graduated in 1997. He wrote his thesis on Alan Moore's graphic novel Watchmen .

After signing a contract with the British music label Rough Trade in 2001, Lewis released his first album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane there . This was followed by It's The Ones Who've Cracked That The Light Shines Through in 2003 . City & Eastern Songs was released in the UK in November 2005. On this album he worked closely with his brother Jack Lewis who wrote and sang some songs. Lewis also collaborated with artists such as Kimya Dawson from The Moldy Peaches and Diane Cluck . Some of his self-drawn comics appear in the cover art of his albums.

In 2006 he supported Adam Green in some of his appearances, a year later he was on stage with Daniel Johnston , whom he also names as a role model, and anti-folk colleague Herman Düne on stage. In October 2007, 12 Crass Songs were released . On this album Jeffrey Lewis interprets 12 songs by the anarcho-punk band Crass . It wasn't until four years later, in October 2011, that A Turn In The Dream-Songs came out on the market. His seventh album under his own name on Rough Trade, Manhattan , he released on October 30, 2015 with his band Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts , produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr.). Los Bolts (like The Jrams before ) consists of Heather Wagner (drums) and bassist Caitlin Gray as well as contributions by Turner Cody and David Beauchamp. At the US punk label Don Giovanni , Lewis dedicated a homage to Tuli Kupferberg, who died in 2010, on April 13, 2018 - a cover album , Works By Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010) . The underground legend Kupferberg, who also had multiple artistic talents, namely musician, cartoonist and poet, is a kind of forerunner of Jeffrey Lewis in the bohemian New York City and was personally friends with him.
