Diane Cluck

Diane Cluck is a Pennsylvania native singer-songwriter , composer and guitarist with roots in the New York anti-folk scene. She has lived in the small town of Stone Mountain in the state of Georgia since 2007 .

Life

Diane Cluck grew up in an Amish community in Pennsylvania . She learned to play the piano at a young age.

In early 2000, she left the Amish community and moved to Brooklyn , New York City . There she started to play the guitar and wrote her first songs. She learned to play the guitar as well as other instruments such as the harmonium, zither, violin and glockenspiel .

In the following years she performed frequently at the "Open Mic Nights" in the Sidewalk Cafe, the meeting place for the anti-folk scene in New York's Lower East Side. She is friends with the Casady sisters of CocoRosie and her album Countless Times was released on the label VoodooEROS , which belongs to Bianca Casady . Cluck can be heard on the CocoRosie album Noah's Ark on the song "Armageddon" as a background singer.

Musical development

So far she has recorded a total of six albums. Her song Monte Carlo can be heard on the Rough Trade Compilation Anti Folk Volume 1 , where she works with other artists of the anti-folk scene such as B. Adam Green , Kimya Dawson or Dufus can be heard. Musically she worked a. a. with Jeffrey Lewis , Herman Düne , David Garland and Kimya Dawson. Diane Cluck's last album, Monarcana , was released on July 10, 2006 on the Very Friendly label . Monarcana is a compilation of demo songs that Diane Cluck recorded at home from 2001 to 2004.

She toured the US in July 2006 and the UK from July to August 2006 . In the summer of 2007, Diane Cluck toured Europe again and this time she also played in France , Spain , the Netherlands and Scotland . In the fall of 2007 she toured through smaller cafes in the USA, mostly on the east coast. In spring 2008 she mainly played concerts in her home country, the USA . In the summer of 2008, Diane Cluck was again on a European tour, which took her to Northern Europe, u. a. to Sweden and Norway . On this tour she was accompanied musically by a drummer for the first time.

style

Her music is considered by many critics to be more sophisticated than the music of other anti-folk musicians. Cluck plays the guitar during her performances - this is her main instrument. However, she also played on her albums. a. Piano , organ , harmonium , xylophone , violin , percussion and zither . She is inspired by artists and composers like Erik Satie and Kate Bush . In her music she often uses disharmonies and powerful guitar playing.
