Mit Gott für Kaiser und Reich is an Austro-Hungarian silent film in the form of a "patriotic drama" from 1916 by Luise Kolm and Jakob Fleck .
action
The focus of the story is the Austro-Hungarian Major von Hess with his family and his adjutant, Lieutenant Falk. Both officers have to say goodbye to their families as they are being transferred to the Russian battle line on a front mission. While the men want to fight for fame and honor, those at home help each other; so the majoress takes the mother of young Falk into her home.
The following scenes show impressions of battles and deployments of the cavalry, assault attacks and the capture of tsarist foot soldiers. The hunt for female spies and their arrest is also often part of the action. After some time at the front, during which Hess and Falk have shown themselves to be brave heroes, they both return to their wife, daughter and mother as winners. The reception by the family and several war veterans takes place with great jubilation. The story ends well with the engagement of Lieutenant Falk and Klara von Hess.
Production notes
Mit Gott für Kaiser und Reich was probably produced towards the end of 1915 and premiered as a four-act act on March 24, 1916 in Vienna . As a patriotic cinema work, it was also released for the youth. The film was about 1,500 meters long. Even with the war allied Germany, the work passed the censorship effortlessly in April 1916 and was also approved for the youth there a little later.
With this production, Wiener Kunstfilm followed the path taken by patriotic war films at the end of 1915 . After the great public success of Mit Herz und Hand fürs Vaterland , a patriotic family story about heroic glory on the battlefield, in which Hermann Benke and the film debutante Liane Haid also played two of the leading roles, these two actors were also brought in for Mit Gott für Kaiser und Reich .
Reviews
In Paimann's film lists you can read: “Material is simple, plain, photos are very good, battle scenes and the game is great. The music, especially the music box scene at the farewell, and the battle peaks are excellent and their richness of sound should be even better accentuated with the precise interaction of the music with the film. The bear and weird kitchen scenes could be cut for the benefit of the whole. In my opinion, this patriotic film should again be a box office piece of the first order. "
