The Mitromorphidae are a monophyletic family of small to medium-sized shell snails that are only found in the sea . The genera and species of this family were counted to the family of cone snails within the superfamily Conoidea until 2011 .

features

The housing of the Mitromorphidae can be 3 to 30 millimeters high, but for most species it is between 5 and 10 millimeters high. It is slim, highly conical, with up to 4.5 turns. The mouth is narrow, the siphon channel is short or not clearly formed. The mouth cannot be closed by an operculum . There may be 1-3 small bulges on the spindle edge, known as spindle folds. The radula is relatively short, the radula teeth are awl-shaped , with a thickened base and occasionally small barbs at the tip.

Way of life

The species of the Mitromorphidae family have a predatory diet. As with the other families of the superfamily Conoidea, which is also called Toxoglossa, a poison channel runs through the radula teeth, with the help of which even relatively large prey can be overwhelmed.

Systematics and taxonomy

Thomas Lincoln Casey described in May 1904 several tribes within the Pleurotomidae, which were later assigned to the family of the slug snail (Turridae), including the tribe Mitromorphini. Under the name Mitromorphinae, these snail species formed their own subfamily within the slug tower snails for a long time before they were placed in the subfamily Clathurellinae from the family of cone snails (Conidae). Bouchet et al. raised three groups of snails from this subfamily to separate families in 2011: Borsoniidae , Clathurellidae and Mitromorphidae. This division is based on both morphological and molecular biological results. In addition to the housing morphology, the construction of the radula and other anatomical features were also used. The analysis of the DNA sequences on three gene fragments completed the study.

The sister group of the Mitromorphidae are the Bouchetispiridae described in 2012 .

Genera

There are currently five recent and two fossil genera belonging to this family.
