Post Palace ( Palazzo delle Poste ) Trieste

The Central European Post and Telegraph Museum in Trieste is a museum of the Austrian and Italian postal history of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is located on the ground floor of the former Trieste headquarters of the Imperial and Royal Post and Telegraph Administration, built in 1894 by the Viennese architect Friedrich Setz , today the Postpalast ( Palazzo delle Poste ) on the Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

history

Trieste became a free port of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1719 and developed into the most important seaport on the Adriatic in the following years. In 1749 a daily postal connection was created between Vienna and Trieste and from 1842 a distance-dependent tariff system was introduced by the Imperial and Royal Post and Telegraph Administration . As part of the German Confederation , Trieste was also part of the German-Austrian Postal Union and a "real part of Central Europe " from 1850 . From 1857, with the completion of the Imperial and Royal Southern State Railroad , the traffic of goods and goods between the port and the industrial centers of the Danube Monarchy rose explosively, and the post and telegraph office in Trieste consequently became an international center of the post and telegraph connections of that time.

From 1890 to 1894 the mighty Post Palace was built in Borgo Teresiano according to plans by the architect Friedrich Setz . The building, built in the eclectic style of the neo-renaissance , has, among other things, a central, glass-roofed post office hall on an area of almost 7,100 m².

The non-profit association founded in 1995 for the creation of a post and telegraph museum with the participation of the city of Trieste had the goal of documenting the postal historical legacy of the city, the region and neighboring countries and making it accessible to the public. In 1997 the museum was opened on the ground floor of the main post office building in Trieste, in which the original equipment of the historic post office was partly integrated. Since 2001 the museum has been part of the City Museums for History and Art ( Civici Musei di storia ed arte ).
