The Mediterranean brown trout or Corsica trout ( Salmo cettii ) is a species from the family of salmon fish (salmonids), on Corsica , Sardinia , Sicily and in Italy in the area of Magra occurs. Many authors see the Mediterranean brown trout as a subspecies of the trout (as Salmo trutta macrostigma ). It is still unclear whether the species or subspecies now regarded as the Mediterranean brown trout is mono- or polyphyletic .

features

Mediterranean brown trout usually remain relatively small and reach a body length of no more than 40 centimeters. The body has 20 to 60 black and brownish-red, small, eye-like points as well as nine to 13 dark bars on the flanks when fully grown. The caudal fin is slightly indented.

Way of life

The animals colonize streams in the hill country and karst spring areas in the lowlands. They like to be in densely vegetated areas. Mainly aquatic insects serve as food. The spawning season is between January and March, the eggs are laid on a gravel bottom in shallow water.

Hazard and protection

The Mediterranean brown trout is classified as Near Threatened (NT) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The species is threatened by water abstraction, overfishing and the introduction of alien trout species. According to the IUCN, it is believed that over the past three generations (10 to 12 years) the population has declined by almost 30%. Due to the likely increasing water abstraction, a further decrease can be assumed.

The Mediterranean brown trout is listed by the European Union in Appendix II of the Habitats Directive and is therefore a species of community interest, for whose conservation special protection areas must be designated by the member states.
