Rie Miyazawa ( Japanese 宮 沢 り え , Miyazawa Rie ; born April 6, 1973 in Nerima ) is a Japanese actress . Her mother is Japanese and her father is Dutch .

Miyazawa was a familiar face on Japanese television during the economic boom of the 1980s and early 1990s. Especially appearances on TV commercials (including with Arnold Schwarzenegger ) made her a child star, while in the background her mother pulled the strings as a manager and was known to the public as Rie-mama . At the age of 18, Miyazawa earned over 400 million yen (approx. 2.9 million euros) annually only with sponsorship deals .

Miyazawa was hired for a movie for the first time at the age of 15. For her appearance in Bokura no Nanokakan Sensō ( ぼ く ら の 7 日間 戦 争 , Our Seven Day War ), she was honored as best young actress with a Japanese Academy Award . More films followed. In November 1991, a book of photos with nudes was published under the title Santa Fe , which had the consequence that a contract with the television broadcaster NHK was not concluded, but sold over 1.5 million copies in the first three months alone.

In the same year Miyazawa announced her engagement to sumo wrestler Takanohana Kōji . However, the connection was broken again in 1993.

In the next few years, Miyazawa had increasing personal problems. Her relationship with her mother worsened and in 1994 she had an accident, according to official reports, while voices in the media spoke of a suicide attempt. There was also talk of an eating disorder . In fact, Miyazawa entered treatment for anorexia nervosa in 1996 .

Her comeback began in May 1996 with minor roles and work for television. Miyazawa began to establish herself as a serious actress around the turn of the millennium. Her breakthrough came with the multi-award-winning film Samurai in the Twilight by Yōji Yamada , which was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film . 2014 starred in the film Kiki's Small Delivery Service .
