The city of Bad Neustadt an der Saale was selected by the Bavarian state government on July 7, 2010 as the first Bavarian model city for electromobility . The aim is to initiate research and development projects in this sector in order to generate sustainable and competitive products and jobs in electric mobility . The funding period for the model city projects extends until the end of 2016.

Development of the model city

In order to facilitate the market launch of electric vehicles in the Free State of Bavaria and to promote the dynamism of research and development activities in this area, the Bavarian State Government formulated its strategy in 2010 in the future program “Aufbruch Bayern”. Particular attention was paid to questions that arise for rural areas . Bad Neustadt ad Saale, a medium-sized center with approx. 16,500 inhabitants and 14,000 jobs, was awarded the contract for the first Bavarian model city for electromobility in July 2010.

Over the entire funding period (mid-2010 to the end of 2016), the funding volume for all model city projects in Bad Neustadt and the surrounding area from the Bavarian state government amounts to more than 14 million euros, and from the city of Bad Neustadt to around 320,000 euros.

Providing the necessary for the program, set up charging infrastructure relates not only to electric cars and electric commercial vehicles , but also on pedelecs and e-bikes .

Structures of the model city

As part of the activities of the first Bavarian model city for electromobility, the three facilities project management electromobility, technology transfer center electromobility and the promotional association of the model city ME-NES.eV were established. The project management of the model city coordinates the ongoing research and development work and supports the development of new project approaches. In addition, the project management takes on the public relations and organizes the annual vehicle show electromobility.

The Technology Transfer Center for Electromobility serves the area of research and development and independently acquires third-party funded projects.

The sponsoring association of the first Bavarian model city for electromobility pursues the goal of promoting and developing electromobility based on Bad Neustadt.

Industry is an important practical actor at the site . There are automotive suppliers on site, such as Jopp , Preh and other companies. Among other things, the electrical company Siemens owns an electric motor plant in Bad Neustadt. The Siemens plant located on site is currently the subject of restructuring (as of July 2016).

TechnologieTransferZentrum-Elektromobilität (TTZ-EMO)

The TechnologieTransferZentrum-Elektromobilität (TTZ-EMO) is an in-institute of the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt and was founded on January 1st, 2012 in Bad Neustadt an der Saale. The TTZ-EMO serves the two main areas of research and development as well as education and transfer.

Areas of competence of the professors involved

Power electronics , converter technology ; Control of electric drives (sensorless and sensor-based); Electrical machines ; Battery management , state-of-health, state-of-charge ; Car powertrain management and simulation ; Powertrain coordination for hybrid and conventional vehicles; Linear, non-linear and adaptive control methods; Vehicle control; Modeling and simulation of vehicle systems; Regulator rapid prototyping ; Insulating materials and systems; Motor insulation systems and DC voltage insulation systems; Range extender engine controls and vehicle diagnostics; Measurement technology, especially thermal management; Optical metrology and image processing ; Automatic optical inspection; Lightweight construction ; Fiber composites and composites ; Electric power supply (including renewable energies ); logistics

education

Electromobility technical school

The technician training builds on a completed vocational training in the fields of metal or vehicle technology (electrical engineering on request) or as a mechatronics technician , deepens this and also promotes general education. It enables the participants to take on tasks in the middle management level of a company, it also prepares them for possible entrepreneurial independence and also forms the basis for acquiring the technical college entrance qualification . The testing and further development of the existing educational approaches for students and teachers is carried out in the school laboratories of the Jakob Preh vocational school.

Research priorities

Bidirectional and inductive charging in factory traffic; Smooth running wind energy generator ; Optimized battery management; Physico-chemical investigation of aging processes on accumulators ; Acceptance development & usage scenarios

First preliminary conclusion on the model city projects

According to an initial preliminary conclusion on the model city projects, no fewer than 150 new jobs were created in the towns of Bad Neustadt and Salz (in the period from July 2010 to February 2015), according to the project manager of the model city projects Ulrich Leber at a city council meeting at the end of February 2015 Those responsible for the city of Bad Neustadt have spoken out in favor of extending the e-projects beyond 2016.
