Modolv Hareide

Modolv Hareide (born February 15, 1909 in Dypvåg , † March 6, 1983 ) was a Norwegian lawyer and civil servant in the foreign service .

Education and professional career

Hareide was born to Martinus Kornelius Knutsen Hareide and his wife Gjertrud Langset. From 1927 he went to sea, initially as a mate , before he obtained the officer's license in 1932 and the master's license in 1937 . From 1937 Hareide worked as a dispatcher . In 1938 he entered the civil service and initially worked in the office of the Norwegian Attorney General . He was admitted to the bar in 1942 and was posted to the Norwegian embassy in Stockholm the following year . After the end of the Second World War , Hareide took a position in the Norwegian Ministry of Commerce. In 1954 he was seconded to New York as Vice Consul . Two years later he returned to his home country and became deputy head of the navigation department in the Ministry of Shipping. From 1959 he was a member of the Norwegian delegation to the International Maritime Organization . With the establishment of the Norwegian Maritime Authority in 1962, Hareide was appointed Deputy Director before taking over the post of Director General in 1972. As a delegate from Norway, he took part in several international law conferences. For example, in 1960 he was a member of the Norwegian delegation at the conference on the revision of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and in 1962 took part in the International Conference on Combating Oil Pollution in the Sea . In 1977, Hareide also served as President of the 62nd session of the International Labor Conference .
