The Modravské slatě (German Weitfällerfilze or Maderer felt ) are a raised bog complex near the municipality of Modrava ( Pilsen region ) in the Czech Šumava National Park . Together they form the largest moor area in the Bohemian Forest .

geography

The Modravská slať lie west and south west of Modrava, in the direction of the German-Czech border at 980-1368 nm m
The entire area covers an area of 3615 ha. In the west and south, the Modravská be slať by the border ridge of Šumava limited, the same forms the European watershed . Most of the moors in the area drain over the Otava into the river system of the Elbe , only the small rain that originates here flows into the Danube .
In the east of the nature reserve are Modrava and Březník , in the north it is bordered by the red marked hiking trail of the national park.

Part of the area are the moors:

Naturally, the mountain pine felt on the German side also belongs to the raised bog complex.

Flora and fauna

The Rachelbach drains the bog complex.

The moors of the complex offer a valuable habitat for the capercaillie , which is why they are under strict nature protection. In addition, they are home to the typical bog fauna and flora of the Bohemian Forest such as the raised bog yellowfling , dwarf birch or the long-leaf sundew . The Mrtvý les , or “dead forest” in German, is a specialty : similar to the Mrtvý luh near Volary , the roots of the trees were damaged by an underground peat fire, which caused them to die and now protrude as tree skeletons over the moor.

history

In earlier times, the moors were used for peat removal, but also for flooding of wood on the Roklanský potok . From this time nor today exists drift threshold Roklanská nádrž ( Rachel threshold ).

Originally the area belonged to the Schwarzenberg family , who from 1922 placed it under nature protection. In 1929 the Modravské slatě were taken over by the Czechoslovak state and in 1933 other moors were placed under nature protection. Finally, in 1989, a large protected area was set up for all moors. Since 1991 they have been part of Zone I of the Šumava National Park and not open to the public.
